After 40 years, actress Carrie Fisher is finally opening up about a closely-guarded secret — her on-set affair with fellow Star Wars actor Harrison Ford. The then-19 year old and the 33-year old married father of three had an ‘intense’ 3-month affair on the 1976 London shoot.
“It was so intense,” Fisher, now 60, said to People magazine. “It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.”
A long-kept secret
Fisher came across the journals she kept while shooting the first Star Wars film, and decided it was time to talk about her experiences shooting the iconic film. She recently wrote a memoir, The Princess Diarist. Although she’s denied a relationship for years, she felt enough time had passed for her to talk about it.
“It’s been 40 years,” the NY Times bestseller told People. “I didn’t say anything to anybody for years but it’s not like anyone’s deeply affected by it anymore.”
Ford was given advanced notice of the memoir and its content, as well as a copy of the book. No word yet on if he read it.
“Harrison’s very private, but I think I waited an appropriate amount of time. How much longer could I wait?”
They shared their first night together after a birthday party for director George Lucas. Fisher admits that afterwards, she was plagued with self-doubt.
“I looked over at Harrison,” she writes. “A hero’s face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow. How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me?”
The book also talks about almost getting caught one day by their Star Wars costar, Mark Hamill.
“It was about eleven in the morning. Clearly I hadn’t just dropped by for brunch, as no scones or eggs were in evidence,” she said. “‘Harrison took my hand and pronounced solemnly, “We’re engaged.” It was mocking the suggestion that there was anything going on; therefore, it couldn’t be true.”
Fisher says her romance with Ford was brief, only lasting the length of the shoot. Ford was then married to his first wife, Mary Marqardt. They divorced in 1979.
“My affair with Harrison was a very long one-night stand. I was relieved when it ended. I didn’t approve of myself,” Carrie wrote. “He didn’t abuse the situation – he wouldn’t have hurt me, especially once he understood that I was inexperienced. It seemed to take its natural course.”
Ford is now a twice-divorced father of five and has been married to Supergirl actress Calista Flockhart since 2010. Since Star Wars, he’s starred in a number of high-profile films, including the Indiana Jones movies, as well as Blade Runner, The Fugitive, and Air Force One.
He’ll be seen next in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner 2049, due out Oct. 2017, alongside Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, and Robin Wright.
Fisher has since been married once and has one daughter. A successful writer, she’s written a number of books, including Wishful Drinking, a New York Times bestseller. She’s also worked as a script doctor, helping rewrite several successful films. Fisher will continue to play Leia in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII, due out Nov. 2017.
The Princess Diarist hits bookstands Nov. 22. The People magazine is out this Friday.
